Insurance policy coverage gap analysis

Purpose

Give an insurance professional a documented comparison of protection versus the client’s stated risks without replacing legal or underwriting judgment.

Scope

Commercial or personal policies, quotations, schedules, endorsements, exclusions, limits, deductibles, and client coverage requirements. Excluded: binding coverage advice, underwriting, claims decisions, and legal interpretation of policy enforceability.

Data basis

  • Policies or quotes, schedules and endorsements, client risk profile, coverage requirements, loss history, and broker comparison guidance.
  • The fixed records, tables, or folders in the skill scope that hold the relevant history or schema.

Result

A comparison matrix, coverage-gap memo, and prioritized questions or recommendations.

Quality criteria

  • Every compared coverage component cites the policy, schedule, endorsement, or requirement source.
  • Limits, deductibles, periods, exclusions, and conditions are normalized without losing source wording.
  • Each gap distinguishes absent coverage, insufficient limit, restriction, and uncertain interpretation.
  • Recommendations state the risk addressed and evidence used.
  • Conflicting policy versions are identified and not merged silently.

Instructions

Read schedules together with wording and endorsements. Compare like-for-like coverage before comparing premium. Treat exclusions and conditions as separate decision fields. Use the client risk profile as the benchmark and identify where the profile itself is incomplete. Phrase uncertain interpretations as questions for the qualified reviewer.

Adapt before use

Keep the source trail close to every conclusion and preserve the difference between a source fact, a calculated value, an assumption, and a recommendation. Use stable identifiers across the document and sheet so a reviewer can move from a summary statement to the underlying row and source. Prefer a complete, transparent partial result over a confident answer built on missing evidence.

  • Add the firm comparison schema and coverage vocabulary.
  • Define client risk categories, materiality, and escalation rules.
  • Provide the preferred source hierarchy for policy versions.
  • Set required reviewer roles for coverage recommendations.
