Competitor content gap analysis
Purpose
Find content opportunities that are supported by a comparable inventory rather than by generic brainstorming. The analysis shows which buyer topics the company covers, where competitors have useful depth, where their material is weak or stale, and which gaps deserve a defined brief.
Scope
Compare the company content inventory with named competitor URLs or content records across the supplied topic, funnel-stage, audience, format, language, publication-date, update-date, and performance fields. Classify opportunities as missing, underdeveloped, outdated, or differentiation-led. Excluded: copying competitor text, publishing pages, promising search rankings, or treating a competitor’s claim as factual without verification.
Data basis
- Company content table: URL, title, topic, keyword, persona, funnel stage, format, author, published date, updated date, traffic, conversions, and status.
- Competitor page inventory or crawled page text with URL, title, headings, publication cues, topic, and observed date.
- Keyword or buyer-question table with volume, intent, priority, language, and owning product.
- Brand voice, editorial standards, product facts, and existing briefs in scope.
Result
Create a gap matrix with one row per topic and competitor, showing company coverage, competitor evidence, content quality signals, gap type, confidence, and citation. Produce a roadmap document containing the top opportunities, proposed angle, audience, format, evidence, effort band, and dependency.
Quality criteria
- Each comparison uses the same topic definition and observed-date window.
- URLs and page sections support every competitor claim; absent company coverage is evidenced by the inventory query.
- Gap labels follow the defined taxonomy and are not inferred solely from traffic.
- Priority combines demand, strategic fit, competitive weakness, and production effort using named fields.
- Duplicate URLs, redirected pages, gated assets, and language variants are resolved or listed as exceptions.
Instructions
Normalize topics before comparing pages, but retain the original title and URL. Treat a page as “covered” only when its content directly answers the mapped topic; a passing keyword mention is not coverage. Treat competitor traffic or ranking estimates as directional unless the source identifies the measurement method. Use the supplied freshness rule for outdated pages. Recommend a content brief, not a copied outline, and state when an opportunity depends on product proof, legal review, customer evidence, or a missing keyword record.
Adapt before use
- Map inventory columns, competitor-page fields, topic taxonomy, and performance measures.
- Define coverage, freshness, quality, priority, and effort rules with their numeric thresholds.
- Add approved personas, funnel stages, brand constraints, and product facts to the corpus.
Verwandte Skills
- Brand voice consistency check
Checks supplied marketing copy against a brand guide, terminology list, prohibited-language rules, and approved claims, then produces cited findings and corrected versions. Use for brand voice review, tone checks, copy QA, terminology audits, pre-publication review, or messaging consistency control.
- Campaign messaging house
Builds a campaign messaging house and execution plan from a goal, audience, offer, channels, and constraints, linking every message to proof and a measurable action. Use for campaign planning, integrated marketing briefs, messaging architecture, launch campaigns, or demand-generation planning.
- Campaign performance review
Evaluates a completed marketing campaign against its plan, spend, audience, channel, asset, and outcome data, then produces findings and reusable next-time decisions. Use for campaign retrospectives, marketing performance reviews, channel analysis, post-campaign reporting, or budget learning.
- Competitor pricing and packaging monitor
Tracks competitor plans, prices, packaging, usage limits, discounts, and positioning in a dated comparison table. Use for pricing intelligence, packaging reviews, competitive battlecards, price-change monitoring, or market-research updates.
